Barbera is believed to have originated in the hills of Monferrato in central Piemonte, Italy where it has been known from the thirteenth century.

Documents from the cathedral of Casale Monferrato between 1246-1277 detail leasing agreements of vineyard lands planted with "de bonis vitibus barbexinis" or Barbera.

Recent DNA evidence suggest that Barbera may be related to the French-Spanish vine Mourvedre.

Come and pick up your wine June 13 and 14!
Come and pick up your wine June 13 and 14!

Tomorrow and Sunday is our pick up weekend. We are featuring a casual food and flavor pairing  to go with your wine selection.

Tasting Room is open from 12-5 7 days a week, so if you can't make it this weekend you can still get your wine later. But it is so fun to come and have some food.

This year we decided to do something different. We are releasing two Barberas from two different vineyards. Originally we were going to blend the two but after tasting them on their own, they stood out as unique individuals that deserved their own labels.

We hope that you will enjoy them as much as we do.

2007 Villa Vallecito Barbera

This Barbera reminds me of a walk through a botanical garden just as the flowers are blooming. A slight cool breeze guides you through the perfumy noce and as you advance, bright aromas emerge and follow into a sweet and tart finish. But be bold, try it with new flavors!

2007 Cooper Ranches Barbera

Imagine walking into a majestic library filled with deep silence, a hint of sunlight peeking through a window, crackling sounds of pages turing, and a distinct "hint of dust" smell. ( which I find so intriguing) Familiar and complex, the aged fruit will bring you back to that stillness and just as you settle in, the earthy minerals show themselves and invite you to explore a hint of coffee with a smooth finish.

Wine Club Shipments will be going out next week on the 16th and 17th so keep an eye out for that Driver!

Recipe for 2007 Villa Vallecito Barbera

Kebabs of Tuna with Wasabi Dipping Sauce (Tuna can be substituted for Tofu for a vegetarian option)

Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds sashimi-grade tuna, deep red in color
16 large shiitake mushrooms, stems removed
2 large sweet red peppers
1 large red Bermuda onion
8 large bamboo skewers, soaked in water
1 1/2 cups Sherry-Soy Marinade (recipe follows)
1 to 2 teaspoons Wasabi paste (depending on how hot you want it)

Directions
Cut the tuna into 24 equal-size cubes. Quarter the mushrooms. Cut the peppers and onion into 1/2-inch squares. Divide the ingredients equally among the 8 skewers, alternating squares of vegetable and tuna. Pour 1 cup of the Sherry-Soy Marinade over the kebabs and marinate, refrigerated, 2 to 3 hours.Dissolve the wasabi in the remaining 1/2 cup marinade to make a spicy dipping sauce to serve at the table with the grilled tuna.On a hot outdoor grill or under a broiler, sear the kebabs 2 to 3 minutes on each side. The tuna should be medium rare--still red in the center--when served with the dipping sauce.

SHERRY-SOY MARINADE
1/2 cup canola, vegetable, or peanut oil
1/2 cup dry (not cooking) sherry
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons Asian sesame oil
2 tablespoons peeled and finely chopped fresh ginger
2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
1/4 cup coarsely chopped cilantro leaves, tightly packed
3 whole scallions, sliced
3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar (or white vinegar)
1 tablespoon Annatoo (Achiote) paste
2 tablespoons ground cumin

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and heat to just below the boil. Remove from the heat. Cool. This marinade may be stored in a refrigerator up to 2 weeks. Use to marinate chicken, shrimp, or pork for several hours before grilling. Yield: 1 1/2 cups

Zucca Sponsoring the Kick off BBQ for the Film Festival!

Announcing the 1st Annual Calaveras International Film Festival right here in Murphys, CA. May 30 - 31

CIFF - 30 films, 20 countries, 2 days, 1 Festival!

Yes, you read it correctly, Murphys is now home to the 1st Annual Calaveras International Film Festival. The festival's goal is to bring awareness to independent film making and share quality films that are not on the main stream circuit.

With hundreds of films submitted, only the best were selected by a panel of judges based on several different criteria including; creativity, technicality, quality of content and entertainment value. Several different genres were accepted and will be shown ranging from Narrative Feature Films, Shorts, Animations and Experimental & Grind house for the After Hours Fest.  The final selection in the festival features 30 films, from 20 different countries over two days.

A fun and creative twist that the CIFF has thrown in is that each film has been paired with a local wine. On breaks, or when you are walking around, look for the wine and see "why" for yourself.

The CIFF is a festival that celebrates films that are entertaining, have something to say, are well made and most importantly are films that you want to see. "We wanted to showcase independent films that have that perfect blend of entertainment, insight, innovation, technicality and creativity" says film festival director Joshua Steck. "There are a lot of great films out there that do not make it to the mainstream screens and it is our mission to find them and get them to you."

The CIFF chose Murphys for it's unique qualities, great food, beauty and great wines. Can you think of a better way to spend a weekend than to watch unique fun films, find that perfect wine that you have been looking for, watch more films, and have great food?

The weekend starts off on Friday night for a BBQ and wine tasting at the Zucca Mountain Vineyards Tasting Room and Garden.  Discover their, not yet released, 2007 Barbera.

Saturday morning, walk over to the Black Bart Theatre where the festival starts during the day with award winning Feature Films: Crawford and Before the Music Dies.

Saturday night stroll over to the Newsome Harlow Tasting Room off of main street at 7pm for the After Hours fest featuring a collection of films in the experimental and grind house genre. Featuring Blood Car, Liminal etc…and a "First Taste!!  Newsome-Harlow will be releasing three new Zinfandels for the first time under their 'Vineyard Select Series'.  The wines will be released to the public on May 30th to coincide with the 1st Annual Calaveras International Film Festival."

Sunday enjoy more films at the Black Bart Theatre with some short films and ending with the feature film Skid Row.

So get out your calendar and mark off this weekend, May 29-31st as this will be a great event not to be missed. Portions of the proceeds from the CIFF will fund a youth & community filmmaking educational program in Calaveras.

Tickets are $35.00 for Saturday or $30.00 for Sunday (Includes the After Hours Fest at Newsome Harlow and the Kick off BBQ at Zucca)

Or go to both days for $50.00

You can find information about the festival on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Calaveras-International-Film-Festival/92918528453

or at www.calaverasfilm.com

Tickets are available at: https://calaveras-film-festival.ticketleap.com/

Or Locally at the Zucca Mountain Vineyards Tasting Room 209.728.1623  and at the Newsome Harlow Tasting Room 209.728.

Schedule: (subject to change) is available online at http://calaveras.bside.com/2009/schedule/week )

Here is a sneak peak of some of the films being shown:

Crawford by David Modigliani – Saturday – Feature Film

One small town finds out when, in 1999, Governor George W. Bush buys a ranch in tiny Crawford, Texas calling it "home" just as he sets his sights on the White House. Thrust into the spotlight, Crawford booms, but when the war in Iraq escalates Cindy Sheehan and her peace movement arrive, igniting local and national tensions.

Break – Walk around town, each film is paired with a wine, so take a walk around, find the wineries and see why.

Before the Music Dies by Andrew Shapter – Saturday – Feature Film

Narrated by Forest Whitaker, this film asks whether original music is drowning in the wake of big label marketing? Will radio ever again be the influential force it once was? Does the next great artist even have a chance to be heard? These questions and more are explored from a fan's perspective in "Before the Music Dies," an unsettling and inspiring look at today's popular music industry.

Skid Row by Pras MichelSunday – Feature Film

This film documents Pras Michel's (The Fugees) 9-day experiment as a homeless man in down town Los Angeles.

Eight miles from Beverly Hills, Skid Row has the highest rate of violent crimes on the west coast. On any given day there are 80,000 homless in L.A. County. Over 11,00 live on the streets of Skid Row.

Blood Car by Alex Orr – After Hours – Feature Film

A kindergarten teacher invents a car that runs on human blood to combat high gas prices. This horror/comedy takes an absurdist look at a future in which no one drives due to $40-a-gallon gasoline prices. Both a satire on our voracious habit for oil, as well as a cleverly structured horror film, BLOOD CAR will make you cringe and laugh at the same time.

Cirkus by Thomas Pors – After Hours – Animated Short

Naive clown with a fabulous act and a heart of gold wants to join the circus. Unfortunately he ends up in the wrong place: A circus where the manager is apathetic, the ballerina has had enough, and the horse is on prescription drugs…

Delivery by Till Nowak – Sunday – Animated Short

A surrealistic fable on the world to come the portrayal of a corrupt society infested by machines, that has forgotten the human being, a future in which there is still place for hope: Flowers can grow again.

Birthdays?

Hello my favorite travelers,

So this is a follow up to the previous email I sent out about the Travel insurance data, and I still from most of you (you know who you are :) ) Your birthday, person/spouse/friend/relative traveling with you's birthday, and then an emergency contact person, your cell phone number.

The travel insurance price is based on age and I do have to get you enrolled as soon as possible, so if I do not hear from you by Monday April 20th,  I will guess ( oh no! I won't tell you what I guessed) and we can adjust later if needed.

This is going to be so fun and i am really looking forward to it!

Cheers!

Working to keep our energy low

Zucca has been very creative in it's approach to energy conservation and is always seeking new ways to alter or reduce their energy usage, so they requested an energy audit from PGE.

Two representatives from Pacific Gas and Electric visited Zucca Mountain Vineyards winery and tasting room on March 4 to conduct an energy audit. The PG&E reps reviewed the energy used in crushing, bottling, cooling, lighting, and cleaning and gave recommendations for energy savings. They also provided resources for more energy efficient light bulbs and changing the winery air conditioning to utilize night-air cooling. "If we can set up a night-air cooling system for the winery we will be able to use the cool nights to cool the winery at a fraction of the energy we are now using. Our wine containers are already so well insulated that we can just close them up on hot days and they will remain cool until the evening. We will then just use the air conditioners on those very hot days and nights in mid summer." Says, Gary Zucca, owner and winemaker.

"The energy audit is just part of an extensive and continuous process of improving our winemaking process and reducing our use of chemicals, energy, and water", said Carol Zucca, owner and winemaker.
